Paint.net Tutorial: How to Mirror Text & Images

Previously, I did a written tutorial on how to mirror text using Photoscape. I also did a video tutorial on it. However, I find myself using Paint.net a lot more recently. I really like Paint.net and use it a lot because it's great for doing quick and easy image editing task. I decided to do a tutorial on mirroring text and images using Paint.net for anyone who's interested in knowing how it's done.

There are three main steps to mirror text and images using Paint.net. 1. Type your text and/or choose your image. 2. Duplicate the layer & vertical flip it. 3. Gradient the text/image using transparency.

I'm going  to tell you each step and use a few screen shots, but I also did a video tutorial. If you want to skip this written tutorial, you can find the video tutorial at the end of this blog post.

Here's the text tutorial: How to mirror text and images using Paint.net:
Select New and key in the width and height you want your mirrored image to be.

Add a new layer. Click on the Text icon and choose your preferred font and text size. Type in your text and if you're including an image, then open/select, copy and paste/position in your image.

Click on the duplicate layer icon in the Layers dialog box to duplicate the layer. Click on Layers in the menu and select Flip vertical to flip the duplicate layer.

On your keyboard, hold down the Ctrl key and click the up arrow button to gradually move the flipped layer closer to the upright one.

When you've positioned the flipped layer in the desired position, click Edit in the menu and click Deselect.

Merge all layers together by clicking the Merge layer down icon in the Layers dialog box. Click on Gradient icon in the Tools dialog box. In the Colors dialog box, change the primary color to transparent and the secondary color to white. On the gradient tool options choose Color and Normal blending.

Somewhere on the upright text/image, Click and hold down the mouse and drag it down into the flipped text/image. The top will be transparent and the bottom will be blended white.

Adjust as needed, by clicking, holding down and dragging the tiny circles. There's your mirrored text/image. Crop it and/or adjust as needed.

Cartoon Yourself Using Paint.net Tutorial

A while ago I did a blog post tutorial on how to cartoonize yourself using Photoscape, but do you know you can cartoon yourself using Paint.net also? Paint.net does not have a “cartoon” button like Photoscape does, but it is very easy to get the cartoon effect. With a few clicks and adjustments you can in fact, cartoonize any photograph.

Sure there are some free online site that will allow you to cartoonize yourself, but you would need to upload your personal photos and you must be online while doing it. Some people may not be comfortable uploading their personal photos online. But, anyone can download and use Paint.net and cartoon their photos anytime they want to, at their own discretion without uploading their private pictures or having to stay connected on the Internet.

In just a few clicks, you can go from the photo on the left to the cartoon on the right.

Follow these steps to cartoon yourself. Note: You can find my video tutorial below these written instructions if you learn better from seeing how it’s done.

1. Download Paint.net if you don’t already have it. It can be downloaded at www.GetPaint.net.
2. Open Paint.net
3. Click “File” & “Open” to load the photo you want to cartoon.
4. Click “Effects”, “Artistic”, “Ink Sketch”.
5. Adjust the “Ink Outline” & “Coloring”. Click “OK”
6. Click “Effects”, “Noise”, “Median”.
7. Adjust the “Radius” & “Percentile”. (Note: Radius is best at a low number).
8. Adjust the “Ink Sketch” again if necessary. You can also adjust the color hues, etc.
9. Optional: Fill in backgrounds with a bright color for a more dramatic cartoon-like effect. Also, add cartoon-like text.
